City walkers number 10,000

More than 10,000 people participate in city walking on a daily basis near Yunlong Lake in Xuzhou city, Jiangsu province, Modern Express reported.

People start walking in a team with numbers growing from dozens to hundreds then thousands, accompanied by high-spirited music. The 7km walk takes about an hour. Walkers sometimes cause problems for traffic.

Bogus oil sold on JD.com

Exxon Mobil Corp said it had tested an oil sample from a client who bought the product, branded Mobil, from JD.com, and found it to be counterfeit, according to tmtpost.com, an online media platform supplying commercial and tech contents.

JD.com said the product is from a third party. Related products from the merchant have been removed and an investigation is underway.

Brazil defeat lucky for lottery winner

A lottery entrant won 900,000 yuan ($144,090) with a wager of 14,400 yuan after Germany's sweeping victory over Brazil in the World Cup semifinal, according to news.163.com on Wednesday.

The lucky winner told reporters he was not a huge fan of soccer and took a risk with the bet, while speaking highly of Germany’s performance and forecasting the Germans will win the final against Argentina.

About 3,000 other entrants enjoyed an unexpected bonus from the high odds offered on Brazil's catastrophic defeat.

Beijing subway Line 14 set to open

The east section of Beijing subway Line 14 will start operating on December 28, The Beijing News reported on Thursday.

When the line starts service, 10 of its total 12 stations will be in use, among which Jingshunlu is expected to connect to the airport line, although this has not yet been confirmed. The main structure of all stations on the eastern line is complete with 75 percent of fixtures and fittings done.

The east section will link with the rest of Line 14 on August 20 with the entire line expected to undergo a pilot run in late September.

Corruption fight among top issues in survey

The Communist Party of China's anti-corruption blitz was among the hottest issues in China in June, according to survey results released by China Youth Daily on Wednesday.

Of the top 20 issues ranked by the newspaper's "public opinion index", seven are related to the fall of senior officials. The expulsion from the Party of former military official Xu Caihou ranked second, followed by the investigation of Su Rong, former vice-chairman of China's top political advisory body.

Elevator project on city wall won't go forward

The province's Administration of Cultural Heritage has ordered a halt to a project to build an elevator on the 600-year-old city wall in Xi'an, people.com reported on Wednesday.

In a letter it sent on Tuesday to the Xi'an Administration of Cultural Heritage, the administration said the project was illegal and broke the State cultural heritage protection law and the province's cultural heritage protection regulations. The part of the project that had been already constructed was removed on Tuesday.

Advance notice required for weddings, funerals

Under a new regulation, officials in Shangqiu are required to alert the local disciplinary authorities three days before the wedding or funeral of a family member.

The regulation, unveiled recently by the city's anti-corruption office, bans officials from receiving gifts, including money, from officials at lower levels or other government departments, including gifts sent in connection with weddings and funerals.

Cangnan breaks up soccer gambling ring

Cangnan police have broken up a major soccer gambling ring, arresting 27 suspects in Hangzhou, Yiwu and Cangnan, according to Cangnan police.

Police said they confiscated cellphones, computers, bank cards and 300 million yuan ($48.4 million) in illegal funds. Cangnan police received a tip about the gambling ring in March and discovered it was headed by three main suspects, including a banker and an accountant.
