100,000 yuan deposit 60 years ago maybe worthless now

Hu Wanzhi, a 74-year-old from Hanzhong, Northwest China's Shaanxi province, was left by his father with a deposit sheet of 100,000 yuan ($16,278) put into bank 60 years ago. However, when he tried to withdraw the money, he faced problems.

The Hanzhong branch of People's Bank of China said they needed to verify the sheet and discuss the cash rate if the sheet is deemed cashable before giving Hu an official reply on how much money he will get.

Experts said the cash rate between old and new bills is 10,000:1. If the sheet is genuine, then Hu would get only 10 yuan on his 60-year-old 100,000 yuan deposit sheet.
