Fake bank cheats hundreds in Nanjing

Police in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, recently shut down a fake bank which cheated about 200 people out of 200 million yuan ($320,000) after more than a year in operation.

The bank, named "Nanjing Mengxin Rural Economic Specialized Cooperative", had all the trappings of other State-owned banks: counters, LED screens and staff in uniforms.

The bogus bank cajoled about 200 victims by promising higher interest rates than other banks and extra interest subsidy.

The fraud was detected after a victim reported to the police that he had not receive the promised interest subsidy and was was not allowed to withdraw his 12 million yuan ($192,000) deposit.
