A Guangdong fisherman caught a whale shark that weighed around 1,500 kilograms and released it back to the sea, Zhanjiang Evening News reported on April 11.
The fisherman, Xu Wenren, said it is the biggest fish he has ever caught and locals have a custom of releasing big fish to the wild.
The species is the world's largest known fish and was listed as a CITES protected species. The average size of an adult whale shark is estimated to be 9.7 meters and 9 tons.
