Replica of animal head fountain appears
China's trend of copying famous cultural relics continues. A copy of the Egyptian Great Sphinx popped up in East China's Anhui province in March, and now, a historic fountain has reappeared in North China's Shanxi province.
The historic fountain consisting of 12 Chinese zodiac animal heads appeared on the street of Taiyuan, North China's Shanxi province, chinanews.com reported on April 25.
The fountain was originally in the Old Summer Palace, the biggest royal garden of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), which was destroyed in 1860 by British and French forces.
The animal head sculptures were looted and lost overseas after the invasion of British and French forces and became the symbols of looted relics from the Old Summer Palace. As of 2014, the sculptures of the snake, sheep, cock and dog heads have still not returned to China.
