School plants wheat in greenbelt

A school in North China's Hebei province has taken on an innovative teaching project by planting a wheat field as a greenbelt around its newly built teaching building last October.

The 0.53-hectare wheat field has turned into a bumper harvest this month and about 1,000 kg of wheat has been cut by students on Tuesday morning.

The urban students, most of whom are seeing wheat for the first time, said the whole process was fun and it has made them appreciate the hard work of farmers more.

The school principal said the wheat, which is chemical fertilizer and pesticide free, will be ground into flour and made into steamed buns at the school canteen.
