Median barriers trigger controversy

It's generally agreed that barriers in the middle of a road serve to help regulate traffic, but seldom does one think they can be a threat to drivers' safety.

On July 16 a Mini Cooper ran into a wooden median, propelling the barrier's wooden stakes through the front window and leaving some protruding from the car's back - fortunately leaving the driver with only slight injuries, in Qingdao, East China's Shandong province, qingdaonews.com reported.

The accident triggered online discussion on the median's defects. A microblogger named Qingdaosheyingshishenlan said such damage could kill people.
