A real human tragedy

On Dec 12, Zhang Ninghai, a 23-year-old policeman, died while trying to rescue 18 Fudan University students trapped in Huangshan Mountain in Anhui province. Zhang's death is a tragedy indeed, but a greater tragedy is the indifferent attitude of the students, says an article on People's Daily website. Excerpts:

The management of the Huangshan Mountain scenic zone has said the place where the students from Shanghai's Fudan University were trapped is one of the steepest and out of bounds for tourists and trekkers.

The local government warns outsiders not to venture in the area alone, but the students still did so. Some reports said the Fudan University students had not even bought tickets to enter the scenic area.

Worse, the students didn't show any remorse after the accident.

The Fudan University BBS even showed discussions in which participants said entrance tickets were "unnecessary".

Some even said the rescue team was "unprofessional" and the university's power to control the media was waning.

Instead of admitting the mistakes and repenting for them, the students have been selfish and boisterous.

They don't have respect for life and are masters of poor moral standards.

Breaking rules is not a small mistake in itself, but it can still be rectified. But arrogance, lack of ethics and indifference to human life are things that cannot be fixed easily.

Some Fudan University students did lay flowers and mourn the young policeman's death. We hope the others would learn from them and become better citizens and human beings.

'Most expensive' screw cap

The Automotive Vehicle Drivers' Association in Liuzhou, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, charges 27 yuan for a screw cap, which is exorbitantly high. This is a simple case of cheating, says an article in Beijing News. Excerpts:

After the media reported that the price of screw caps was exceptionally high, the Automotive Vehicle Drivers' Association in Liuzhou came in for widespread criticism.

But the fact is the Liuzhou case is not the first of its kind. Similar cases have come to light before.

In the Liuzhou case, the association did not force drivers to become its members and make them pay membership fees.

But as an authorized dealer, it sells a screw cap for 27 yuan when its price is only 1 yuan in retail shops.

This is another story that highlights how some associations are making fools of people and how they have become a place for trading power and money.

Actually, such associations have turned into breeding grounds for corruption.

If the government does not take immediate measures to bring such associations to book, more of their kind may mushroom across the country to cheat more people.
