A 9.5-meter-tall statue of Confucius was unveiled in front of the National Museum of China in Tian'anmen Square recently. The purpose of installing such a grand statue, however, is questionable, says an article on eastday.com. Excerpts:
The purpose of such a statue is not to restore the image of Confucius but to enhance Confucianism's effect by using tons of bronze.
People should be aware of Confucius' dual influence on Chinese civilization. His thinking and behavior have guided Chinese people for more than 2,500 years. But given his wisdom, Confucius (and Confucianism) has been somewhat apotheosized and worshipped blindly.
Of course, we have every reason to respect Confucius and his contribution to Chinese civilization, but that does not necessarily mean we should inherit all his thoughts.
Confucianism cannot push Chinese civilization forward today like it did in ancient and medieval times.
But the situation has changed today. It is so different from earlier times that Confucianism has to be modified to suit the demands of modern society. Today's world is one of diversity, and Confucianism should no longer dominate Chinese society.
