The United States International Trade Commission launched on Jan 22 an investigation into some Chinese makers of paper shredders.

A total of eight Chinese companies — including New United Co Group Ltd in Jiangsu province and Shenzhen Elite Business Office Equipment Co Ltd in Guangdong province — along with one US company are being investigated.

The investigation is based on a complaint filed by Fellowes Inc and Fellowes Office Products (Suzhou) Co Ltd late last month.

The complaint alleged violations of Section 337 of the US Tariff Act of 1930 regarding patent infringements and misappropriation of trade secrets.

The complainants requested that the USITC issues an exclusion order and cease-and-desist orders to the involved companies.

The USITC said it will make a final determination in the investigation at the earliest practicable time. Within 45 days after institution of the investigation, the USITC will set a target date for completing the investigation.

USITC remedial orders in Section 337 cases are effective when issued and become final 60 days after issuance unless disapproved for policy reasons by the US Trade Representative within that 60-day period.
