Police in Shangnan county, Shaanxi province, uncovered a strange tale when they responded to a report on Jan 23 of a man being stabbed and robbed.

They found that the retired worker, surnamed Wang, had been injured at home when two masked robbers broke in, attacked him, and ran off with around 18,000 yuan ($2,740).

When the police followed up on leads, they apprehended three people, one of whom turned out to be the man's daughter-in-law.

The woman admitted that she had hired the two for 10,000 yuan to attack Wang as an act of revenge.

She explained that she had found a letter he had written to his deceased wife and placed next to a shrine, in which he used foul language to criticize the daughter-in-law.

Police are still looking into the case.
