BEIJING - The National Meteorological Center (NMC) Wednesday continued its high temperature alert for south China as the hot weather is expected to persist over the next three days.

The weather agency forecast temperatures in South China's Guangdong province and Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, and most areas south of the Yangtze River to stay around 35 to 37 degrees Celsius over the coming three days, but the heat waves will be less intense.

It urged people in these regions to cancel outdoor activities in the early afternoon when temperatures are the highest and advised outdoor workers to protect themselves from the hot weather. It also warned of fire risks triggered by power overloads.

In other parts of China, however, heavy rains are expected, particularly in the southwestern Sichuan Basin, Chongqing Municipality, Guizhou and Yunnan provinces. Mid-eastern areas in northeast China will also experience heavy rainfalls over the next couple of days.

The NMC also warned that strong winds are likely to sweep the East China Sea and Taiwan as Typhoon Muifa, which is expected to be upgraded to a super typhoon, is moving northwestward.
