A young woman died of a brain hemorrhage because she delayed seeing a doctor to avoid losing a 600 yuan work bonus for good attendance, Nanfang Daily reports.
Du Juan, 23, suffered serious injuries after she accidently banged her head on a work bathroom door in Shenzhen where she worked as an assembly line worker.
Despite being in intense pain and losing her hearing, Du continued to work for another three days without medical attention so she would not lose her 600 yuan ($95) bonus for a full year’s good attendance record.
"She was in a very bad state the next day and kept holding her head the following two days. Her hearing worsened and couldn't hear her sister talk," the paper quoted Hu Li, Du's former colleague, as saying.
Du insisted on working for another three days after the incident so she could get the 600-yuan full-attendance bonus.
She was eventually diagnosed with cerebral hemorrhage and died a week later.
The funeral has not taken place pending negotiations between Du's family and her employer Belton Company.
Growing up in a poverty-stricken county in Henan province, Du started working from the age of 18 when she graduated from high school. She worked for 11 hours on average every day for minimum wage, the paper said.
