City think tank to recruit foreigners

Beijing will recruit five foreigners to serve as part of the city government's think tank, according to China News Service.

The overseas recruitment is to help improve the city government's administrative and decision-making capabilities.

Qualified candidates must be under 55 years old, and have served as a professor, researcher or expert at a renowned foreign university, college or research institute; have worked in a global corporation, financial institute or law firm as a senior manager or specialist; or have served as senior manager or expert at an international institute, foreign government or non-governmental organization, a Beijing municipal official said.

Guangdong

Woman jailed for killing attacker

A young woman in Guangzhou who killed a man after he attempted to rape her, has been sentenced to four years in jail on Tuesday.

The woman, surnamed Xuan, was approached by a man surnamed Yang at Guangzhou Railway Station after she failed to purchase a railway ticket to Xiamen in Fujian province in May 2011.

Xuan had no money for a place to stay and agreed to follow Yang to a house he rented. But once at the house Yang attempted to rape her, but Xuan defended herself with a dagger that she grabbed from a wall, stabbing Yang to death.

10m yuan donated for new campus

Koo Yuen Kim, the chairman of Perfect, a health food company, has donated 10 million yuan ($1.57 million) to the Chinese Language and Culture Education Foundation to build a new campus for Jinan University.

The university, which has the largest number of overseas students in China, will build the new campus in the Panyu district of Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong province.

The first phase of the new campus, with an investment of 1.7 billion yuan, will open by 2014.

Hainan

Xisha Islands survey completed

An extensive survey of the Xisha Islands has provided important data for planners of Sansha city, a newly founded prefecture-level city on the islands.

The 34-day survey covered the islands name and history, location, area, coastline, population and other information involving the local ecological system and environment, according to a statement on the website of the State Oceanic Administration.

More than 40 scientists and experts researching ecology and botany on the islands took part in the survey.

Taiwan

Forum held on cross-Straits ties

A forum was held on Tuesday to expand cross-Straits cooperation in cultural and creative industries on Tuesday.

The forum was part of activities associated with the visit of Chen Yunlin, the mainland's top negotiator on cross-Straits affairs, who arrived in Taipei on Monday. He is on a 10-day tour of the island designed to expand cultural cooperation between the two sides.

Chen, president of the Beijing-based Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits, and Chiang Pin-kung, chairman of the Taipei-based Straits Exchange Foundation, co-hosted the forum at the Grand Hotel of Taipei.

Shanghai

Shanghai Tourism Festival all set

The annual Shanghai Tourism Festival will open on Saturday and run until Oct 6, the city's tourism administration said on Tuesday.

A total of 42 tourist spots and 16 hotels will offer discounts during the festival, said Dao Shuming, the city's tourism director.

Various routes, including half-day, one-day and two-day tours, will be available for tourists.

Jilin

Workers dig up ammunition depot

About 2,000 artillery shells have been dug up at a construction site in Jilin city in Northeast China's Jilin province, Jilin Evening News reported.

According to the newspaper, a construction crew digging an underpass on Feiyue Road in Jilin on Friday first discovered grenades and guns and in the following days unearthed more than 2,000 artillery shells.

Police were dispatched to the scene and said the munitions would be packed in boxes and moved to a safe site to be destroyed.
