The Chinese version of Selected Works of Julius Kambarage Nyerere has been published by the press of East China Normal University.
Julius Nyerere (1922-1999) was an African political leader who served as the first president of Tanzania. The English version of Selected Works of Julius Kambarage Nyerere has been published by the Oxford University Publishing House since the 1960s. The four-volume work is of great academic authority for readers to understand Nyerere's thoughts.
The Chinese version will allow more people to look more closely at Nyerere's thoughts and how African people struggled for independence in the second half of the 20th century, experts said.
"We believe this book will be key first-hand reference of what Nyerere dreamt of for an ideal people-to-people contact and co-existence in this world, ideas that are still valid and on-point today, not only to higher learning scholars but also to innumerable Chinese people for a number of generations to come, hence, keeping our torch of friendship alive," Abdulrahaman Amiri Shimbo, Tanzania's Ambassador to China said at the book's launch.
He praised the friendship between China and Tanzania, and also expressed thanks for the contribution that the Chinese government and people have made to Tanzania's economic development and the improvement of Tanzanian people's living standards.
The East China Normal University has a long tradition in the studies of Africa, which dates back to the 1960s. Over the years, the university has set up partnerships with a number of African universities. In 1995, the university's press published the three-volume Overall History of Africa, compiled by professor Ai Zhouchang. The collection represented the highest research level in African studies in China, and has won several awards from the Ministry of Education and Shanghai government.
