Chinese pop idol Han Geng will return for the finale of The Ex-file franchise, one of the highest-grossing domestic romantic comedy series.

Produced by entertainment giant Huayi Brothers and Beijing-based New Saint Film Studio, the latest movie of the franchise, The Ex-file: The Return of Exes, will arrive in Chinese theaters on Dec 29.

Directed and written by Tian Yusheng, a scriptwriter-turned filmmaker, the new story is about two best friends, both of whom face trouble with their girlfriends.

For Han, who shot to fame as a former member of South Korea's boy band Super Junior, the movie is a glimpse into how youngsters handle crisis.

"It is inspirational and interesting for young lovers," says Han, who is now followed by nearly 50 million fans on the Chinese Twitter-like Sina Weibo, a barometer of popularity.

The cast also sees the return of actor Zheng Kai, who features in the first and second movies of the franchise, and actresses Zeng Mengxue and Luo Mi.
