Lauren Conrad's former boyfriend has reached out to make amends with her after getting sober.

Jason Wahler - who dated the former 'Hills' beauty during her time on the MTV show - revealed he waited until he turned his life around, after a string of drunk driving arrests and stints in rehab, before making contact with his ex.

He explained to People: "I wanted to make amends with Lauren. She was a big part of my life and there's stuff that happened in the past with my drunken ways that I needed to address.

"She's an incredible person and so supportive of anything I do to stay clean. But the timing had to be right before I reached back out.

"I needed to humble myself a lot. A lot of those ['Laguna Beach'] people knew me before all the bad stuff, and thankfully I've been able to rekindle a lot of my old friendships."

Jason is now working with the National Therapeutic Services in California as a mentor and sober companion and says Lauren was "impressed" but "more shocked at what I'm doing for work" than she was to hear from him after so long.

Fashion designer and author Lauren has been single since splitting from actor Kyle Howard in June after a three-year relationship.
