Orchid-scented clothes, guerrilla stores with funky fashion, movies, games and even a magic show - these are the latest Valentine gifts from the fashion gurus. Gan Tian with details.
There are two giant pink bunker boxes in the main atrium of Beijing's Glory Shopping Center, and they are full of Valentine's Day choices for the love of your life. (If you are single, consider this the perfect time to pamper yourself.)
The pink boxes house Italian sportswear label Lotto's guerrilla store, specially designed for lovers. Inside, there are candy-colored skirts, purple tops and lilac suede jackets - all part of Lotto's cheeky but inviting Valentine-themed collection simply called "Feel".
The guerrilla store, or pop-up store, was first introduced by Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo. It is a holistic concept - the store not only sells products, but also provides games, video clips and magic shows. Customers are invited to browse, linger and have fun amid the products. The sales message becomes almost subliminal.
At the Lotto pop-up store, romance is definitely in the air.
Here, you can try doll-making with your sweetheart, uncover the secrets of the magic show, and play a character game called "What does she want?"
To reinforce the message, the trailer of the film What Women Want is on a constant loop on the screen. This is not the Mel Gibson and Helen Hunt version but a Chinese adaptation with Andy Lau and Gong Li in the lead roles.
In collaboration with Lotto, the film becomes a fashion catwalk for Gong, one of China's most famous fashion icons on screen. With every costume change, she morphs into a different character.
A smart dark business suit shows off her lady boss facet, and a long shift in leopard prints expresses her feminine strength. Another change into a pair of wide-legged denim pants with a loose sports shirt and she's the epitome of casual elegance.
Gong shows off exactly what women want: Fashion and love.
"There are some items inspired by the romantic moments in the movie," says Coco Wang, Lotto China's public relations manager. "We can call it a real Valentine's themed collection."
In the movie, Gong and Lau plays a game in which she sketches something and asks him to guess what it is. As our hero has mind-reading skills, he knows immediately that she has drawn an orchid.
Coco Chanel once said you should always dab on perfume where you want to be kissed. And Lotto has taken that advice to heart.
Lotto's Feel collection, for both men and women, is scented with the alluring fragrance of orchid. According to Wang, it is a new clothing technology developed by Lotto.
A special fragrance oil is added to the textile used, and the scent lasts for at least 50 washes.
"Lotto is a sportswear label, so when you are wearing these shirts and working out in the gym, you will give off a delightful scent," Wang says.
Sock and leggings are another quick way to get sexy for Valentine's. There are neon-colored leggings, and also socks with printed hearts.
Lotto also features some very stylish hunter boots, with one particularly eye-catching pair sporting kisses that will be ideal for that special day.
Love is in the air, so don't wait too long to add some hearts and kisses to your wardrobe.
