Novelist, translator and writer San Mao, or Echo in English, suffered from severe insomnia and mental disorder. In 1991, at the age of 47, she died in a hospital in Taipei, having hanged herself with a pair of silk stockings. She had been receiving a thorough examination of her mental health at the hospital.
