China must look before it leaps

Comment on "A good turn deserves another" (China Daily, Nov 10)

Some people say that this is a golden opportunity for China to exert more influence on the developed world if it desires. The timing of the rescue is very important, and if China can get it right, it can bargain for better terms for its rescue and investment.

But China has to be very clear about its goals, and whether its government and people have the ability and are prepared to make full use of the intended benefits they may get from this rescue effort.
