Seek medical aid for depression
Comment on "Dark days of despair drive many to the final option" (China Daily, Feb 27)
First, people who suffer from depression should realize that they do so and accept the fact. Second, they should know that it is condition they cannot deal with alone.
I am an American and we are more open to discussion on such issues. It's common for people to have temporary emotional disorders, which could create fear, doubt and uncomfortable feelings.
Despite the differences between the West and East, human beings suffer from the same diseases and conditions. We can learn to deal with and overcome anxiety and depression through family support, and by talking about the problems we have instead of hiding them, and seeking medical help and counseling. Depression is a serious issue and should never be taken lightly. Through education, sharing of problems with others, and professional and social help one can live a better life.
China is a beautiful country with good people. But "saving face" is not the answer to all their problems. Denial will only make things worse, especially when confronted with issues like depression, which is a medical condition even if it is temporary. I hope that through public awareness, government involvement and people's efforts, the stigma attached to mental conditions will be removed.
