Comment on "Protests arise in Taiwan over 'comfort women'" (China Daily website, Aug 14)
It's very important that China maintains the pressure on Japan until the present generation of Japanese knows the truth and realizes the scale of the atrocities that the Imperial Japanese Army committed against the Chinese people and people of other Asian countries before and during World War II.
The Japanese government should make the truth of the war a part of the country's history textbooks, and tell the new generation in schools to reflect upon history.
For long, the Chinese people have been tolerant of and friendly toward the Japanese people, which is admirable. An apology from the Japanese leaders today for the horrors their army unleashed on people in many Asian countries will help them build relations with their neighbors. But unfortunately, they are going the opposite direction.
