At an elevation of about 5,000 meters, the Rongbuk Monastery located on Mount Qomolangma is the highest monastery in the world.
The monastery was built in 1899 by a Ningmapa lama. The number of lamas reached 600 in the past, but now only about 30 there. Mani stones, carved with sacred syllables and prayers, line the site's paths.
Although small, the Rongbuk Monastery holds good influence over the pilgrims. It is the best position for watching and taking photos of Mount Qomolangma.
