The 10th National Exhibition of Chinese Hue Art to be opened on Dec 22 in Beijing will gather works of some 44 artists who are active in the realm of contemporary art. Their works, created since 2013, incorporate the style of gongbi tradition but embrace an experimental spirit.
The triennial exhibition will be held at the National Art Museum of China through Jan 1. It will mark the 30th anniversary of the founding of Beijing-based China Hui Art Society who initiated the exhibition.
Featured artists were recommended by members of an organizing committee of the exhibition that comprises curators, artists, critics and scholars.
Hang Chunxiao, a curator, critic and committee member, says the exhibition challenges the limitation of gongbi as a meticulously detailing technique, and enriches the spirit of gongbi by introducing contemporary art approaches such as installation and video.
Li Qinghe, an ink artist and committee member, says the exhibition encourages more than the innovation of tools and materials that artists are working with, furthermore it looks to the emergence of new concepts that will blur the technical boundary of gongbi.
