China's most decorated winter Olympian, Wang Meng, will return to international competition this week as the 27-year-old left for Calgary, Canada, with the China team on Monday for the season opening World Cup event.
The World Cup Calgary stop, which will be held from Friday to Sunday, is the first international competition that Wang will take part in since her ban from competition last year following a drunken brawl with a former team manager.
"Competing at the World Cup used to be practices for the world championships or the Winter Olympic Games but, this time, I have to recapture the feeling of competition through it," said Wang. "I have to get to know about the skaters from abroad as quickly as possible."
Wang was kicked off the national team and banned from domestic and international competitions last August for punching former team manager Wang Chunlu during a drunken scuffle after she returned late to training camp following a night out.
Wang returned to train with the national team on Oct 3, following a good performance at the national short track speed skating league last month.
