BRUSSELS - The European Union has decided to launch military operation to facilitate humanitarian assistance in Libya.

The European Union will conduct the operation "if requested by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA)," said an EU press release Friday night.  

The operation, dubbed "EUFOR Libya", will focus on the safe movement and evacuation of displaced persons and support to humanitarian agencies active in the war-ridden country.

Rear Admiral Claudio Gaudiosi of Italy has been appointed commander of the operation. It's operational headquarters will be located in Rome, the capital of Italy.

According to the press release, the operation will, unless the European Council decides otherwise, last for no longer than four months after reaching initial operating capability.  

Fighting between forces loyal to Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi and opposition forces have ravaged many coastal cities in the once prosperous North African country rich in oil reserves. The NATO has recently taken over the control over the military operation of Western alliance declared to enforce a no-fly zone and protect the civilians. Record shows that more than 100 civilians have been killed in the alliance air strikes.
