CAIRO - The Egyptian supreme administrative court ordered on Saturday to dissolve the former ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) and hand its assets to the government, the state TV reported.

The NDP, under the leadership of former President Hosni Mubarak, has ruled the country for about three decades and lost its popularity in the 18-day protests over its widespread corruption.

NDP spokesman Nabil Luka Bibawi was quoted by state news agency MENA as saying that the party will take legal procedures against the ruling on the dissolution of the party, explaining that the corruption of one part does not make the whole corrupt.

The party changed its name into New NDP on Monday and named Talaat Sadat, a nephew of the assassinated former president Anwar Sadat, as its head to replace Mubarak.
