MEXICO CITY - A total of 104 people were reported dead in accidents during the Easter week holiday in Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Honduras, authorities said on Sunday.

In Nicaragua, the death toll rose to 45 after five new accidents were reported on Sunday including three more dead just in new drowning accidents, said Miguel Aleman, head of the General Direction of the Nicaraguan Fire Department.

On Friday, Nicaraguan authorities had reported that 40 people have died in different type of accidents.

In Honduras, the National Commission for the Prevention of Accidents (Conapra) said that 25 people died on Sunday, including 12 that died in drowning accidents while the rest died primarily in road accidents caused by the massive flow of domestic tourism.

More than two million Hondurans were estimated to travel during the Holy Week but Honduran Security Minister Oscar Alvarez said the number of fatalities would have been even higher had it not been for the extra precaution implemented by Conapra.

Alvarez expressed his thanks to Conapra for having adopted extra security measures such as sending extra police out to maintain speed limits on all public highways in addition to the hiring of an additional 20,000 volunteers.

Meanwhile, in Costa Rica, 34 people were reported dead during the Easter week holiday, the Costa Rican Red Cross said, adding that this surpassed the 11 deaths reported during the Holy Week last year.

Of the total dead, 13 people died in traffic accidents, 11 people died in drowning accidents at beaches and in rivers, while another 7 were killed by fire arms and three deaths were unspecified.
