NAIROBI -- Police in Garissa, capital city of North Eastern Province of Kenya, arrested three suspects of Al Shaabab late on Monday.
The three who are suspected to be from Bangladesh were intercepted at alnjugur police barrier in a landrover while on their way to Somalia. Before their arrest, the suspects said that they had managed to maneuver their way by using the routes of Mombasa-Voi-Nairobi-Kitui.
The arrest comes just a few days after security personnel along the border have been told to be on high alert following Al Shaabab threats.
Confirming the incident, Northeastern Deputy Provincial Police Officer (PPO) Philip Ndolo said that it was not still very clear how the Al Shaabab suspects managed to evade all the police road blocks.
He further added that the three who claimed to be UK nationals would be taken to Nairobi to verify their nationalities with the British high commission.
"Chances are this suspects were part of the al Qaeda international terrorist group that is linked to Somalia's Al Shaabab terror group, our officers on the ground are very alert and will not condone such characters who are out to compromise our security," he said.
One police officer who talked on condition of anonymity since he is not allowed to talk to the press said that the destination of the three was suspicious because where they had alleged they were travelling was miles away from where they were intercepted.
"I don't think this people were up to any good if anything, they kept on contradicting themselves when we were interrogating them," added the police officer.
Meanwhile, another suspected Al Shaabab man was arrested in the border town of Elwak in Mandera.
The suspect who the deputy police boss termed as a dangerous one and who the police have been looking for was intercepted on his way to Somalia.
"The suspect has been using false names every time, but our officers managed to catch up with him through investigations," Ndolo said.
