LOS ANGELES - Firefighters in the US metropolis of Los Angeles worked throughout better part of the New Year's Eve to fight a renewed spate of fires, believed to be the work of a lone arsonist or multiple culprits who remained at large, local media reported on Sunday.
The first report about the incident went in where some cars parked in or near the 4500 block of Sunset Boulevard, Hollywood were doused with gasoline, but not set on fire. The incident took place between midnight and 2 am (1000 GMT).
However, firemen had to cope with several other fires later in and around Hollywood, where at least six cars parked in carports burst into flames.
No injuries have been reported, but property damage is mounting, according to authorities.
The New Year's Eve fires followed dozens of other similar flames happening from Thursday night to Saturday morning.
Although the authorities have not tallied the total number of the fires, The Los Angeles Times believed they totaled at least 38, representing the worst wave of arson fires since the 1992 riots in the city.
Authorities offered $60,000 in reward for tips leading to the culprit's arrest. The culprit is believed to have used some kind of Molotov cocktail, probably in a container able to break car-window glass.
No arrests were made after police officers rushed to Sunset Boulevard and Havenhurst Drive shortly before 1 a.m. Sunday on reports of a possible suspect in a car matching the description of possible arson suspect's -- a white-and-tan, mid-90s model Lexus ES 300.
Extra firemen were reporting to stations across Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Burbank and Glendale within the Los Angeles County, as authorities were conducting a multi-agency campaign. A telephone hotline was set up, and witnesses were interviewed and tips followed.
Two suspects were arrested on Friday, but later determined playing no part in the rash of arson blazes.
