Thomas Gilliland, spokesman for the Harris County Sheriff's Office, said the suspect was detained after he was wrestled to the ground by a student.
Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia initially said in a statement that the suspect was a 21-year-old student.
The stabbing spree happened near the campus Health Science Center, according to an alert on the college's website.
Twelve people were rushed to area hospitals while three others received treatment at the scene, according to reports.
Robert Rasa of the Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department said many of the victims had stab wounds on the face and neck area.
Of the wounded, two were reportedly in critical condition and three were upgraded to good condition. Other victims had minor injuries.
Initial reports quoted college officials as reporting there may be another suspect involved in the stabbings. But Thomas Gilliland said investigators have no information about a possible second suspect.
Gilliland said investigators were trying to determine the motive behind the stabbings, which appeared to be random. No weapon has been found and initial reports indicated the suspect may have used a knife or pencil.
This is the second incident in recent months at the college. Two people were shot at another Lone Star College campus in January.
