BANJUL -- A Gambian health official on Monday called for more vigilance against the Ebola epidemic that is affecting many West African nations.

A lot of work has been done to promote the awareness on the disease, however, "we need to redouble our efforts to combat the deadly Ebola," said Lamin Jobarteh, director of health at the West Coast Region.

"We are working with the partners such as the WHO (World Health Organization), UNICEF (United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund), the WFP (World Food Program) and other partners to ensure that the West African nation is Ebola free," Jobarteh said at a regional event on Ebola.

Other local health officials also urged the people to remain vigilant and report any suspected case to the nearest Health authorities.

According to the latest report by the WHO, 4,493 people have been killed by Ebola worldwide.
