The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) on January 9 announced nominations for this year’s awards.

Among front runner is the Grand Budapest Hotel, an English-German co-production with 11 nominations. It won the Jury Grand Prix at Berlin International Film Festival last February and was named by Time magazine as one of Top 10 movies of the year.

Others include Birdman, the opening film of the 71st Venice International Film Festival, and The Theory of Everything, a memoir romance of theoretic physicist Steven Hawking with his ex-wife, each securing 10 nominations.

The rest include the Imitation Game starring Benedict Cumberbatch, who has been playing Sherlock Homes in the international hit series since 2010.

The BAFTA will take place on February 8 at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, in London. BAFTA is an independent charity that supports, develops and promotes the art forms of the moving image.
