Europe's long history, rich culture, beautiful Mediterranean scenery and rich shopping resources are main reasons that it continues to be a popular destination among Chinese tourists, according to Caissa.

Most Chinese tourists spend three weeks touring one to three European countries, according to Zhang Yi.

Zhang says Greece and France are popular destinations for couples, while Germany and Italy are frequented by people interested in history, culture and art.

Outdoors activities, such as skiing in France and Switzerland, are also popular. European countries are not very large and have good public transportation, Zhang notes.

Chinese tourists enjoy shopping for luxury items, including watches and wines, as well as healthcare and food products.

The items are cheaper in Europe than in China, and sold at a discount during the summer and Christmas season, says Zhang.
