In Shanghai he shifted somewhat aimlessly, or perhaps impulsively, from urban planning to jewelry design.
"If you do the same job every day, you quickly lose your sense of freshness," he says. "As you can see with the TV show, I like a challenge."
Some of his projects for the program have now become scenic spots.
"The director told me that one property was getting visitors every day, including tour groups from outside Shanghai," he says with a hint of pride.
He sees no end to his welfare work, which he approaches with missionary-like zeal.
