Red Poppy is China's first and only all-female percussion ensemble. Founded in 2000, the group has toured in over 30 countries, performed in world-famous venues such as the Sydney Opera House and Kennedy Arts Center, and participated in over 2,500 performances since its debut. Red Poppy was also invited to perform at three Olympic Games (Athens, Beijing and London). At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Red Poppy not only performed in the Closing Ceremony but also designed the "Fou" drums for world-renowned Director Zhang Yimou, which were used at the start of the Opening Ceremony. This instrument is also featured in Mulan, the classic story of a Chinese peasant girl who disguises herself as a man so that she can take her ailing father's place as a soldier in the emperor's war against the Huns.
