But Wu of the Chinese Equestrian Association says more must be done to promote the Mongolian horse and its heritage.

"China is one of the world's largest equestrian markets. Mongolian horses are an important part of that. But throughout the country you see equestrian enthusiasts and stables bringing in foreign, 'impressive-looking' breeds like Arabians and thoroughbreds to ride and display.

"You need to look beyond appearances. The Mongolian horse, if it is properly trained, is actually suitable for young riders because of its pony-like size and stability.

"We're also pushing for more events that showcase the horse's native strengths, such as endurance races and mounted archery competitions, in line with international standards.

"There are numerous calls to protect the Mongolian horse for future generations. The best way to do that is to appreciate its innate capabilities and give it a platform so it can be shared with the rest of the world."
