A Midsummer Night's Dream was written at a time, near the end of the 16th Century, when England was in the midst of huge social, economic, and cultural change. The play dramatizes a Fairy Kingdom in a forest, which is perhaps not surprising when you consider this was a time when people made sure they covered their heads when they went outside after dark in case the moon provoked a kind of madness in them. But perhaps the strongest belief within the play is in the power of the imagination, which travels across all ages and cultures, and has been the starting point for our production: "imagination bodies forth the form of things unknown".
