Chinese tourists have helped drive up Australia's visitor expenditure figures, while the number of Chinese who visited Australia grew almost 20 percent to more than 1.1 million in 2016, according to figures released by the federal government last Wednesday. The International Visitors Survey (IVS) showed foreign tourists spent a record 39.1 billion Australian dollars ($29.6 billion) throughout the year ending December 2016, a 7 percent rise on the previous year, with Chinese visitors accounting for almost a quarter of that figure.
