"We believe that the Palestinian government is legally elected by the people there and it should be respected," Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao told reporters Thursday.

Zahar said he was happy the Chinese had recommitted to providing the Palestinians with financial help in medical and building projects.

"We heard from them their decision... to continue their support financially and politically for the Palestinian people, recognizing the elected government, so it was very successful."

The Chinese foreign ministry's Liu said although the two sides had not discussed economic assistance during this visit, China had taken into consideration the humanitarian needs of the Palestinians.

"We will continue to provide humanitarian assistance within our capacity," Liu told reporters.
