Road accident kills 8, injures 30 in northern Bangladesh

A bus packed with passengers collided with a truck in northern Bangladesh Friday, leaving at least eight people dead and 30 others injured, a local television station reported.

The accident occurred at Birganj area in Dinajpur district, 272 kilometers (170 miles) north of the capital, Dhaka, the NTV television said.

Five people died instantly while three others died on the way to a government hospital, the report said. The injured were hospitalized.

Police could not be immediately reached for comment.

Road accidents blamed on faulty vehicles, bad driving and poor enforcement of traffic laws kill about 4,000 people a year in Bangladesh, according to the country's Road Transport Authority.
