HO CHI MINH CITY, Vietnam - Thai Prime Minsiter Abhisit Vejjajiva said on Sunday a new election, the focal point of weeks of violent protests, could take place early next year if all sides cooperated in the process.

Abhisit, interviewed by Reuters on the sidelines of a World Economic Forum meeting in Vietnam, also said he wanted to lift an emergency decree, now in place in about one-third of the country, as quickly as possible. But the measure, he said, was still necessary to guard against new outbreaks of violence.
