A Kraz truck and a Toyota car collided at about 05:25 Moscow time (0125 GMT) on the Alexandrovsky highway, some 18 km from Irkutsk, the local Emergencies Ministry told Itar-Tass news agency.

The investigation into the accident was underway.

According to official figures, about 30,000 people lost their lives in traffic accidents every year in Russia due to poor road conditions and reckless driving.

The Russian government adopted a law last week which completely bans alcohol for drivers.
