ISLAMABAD - A US national who got kidnapped in Pakistan a couple of weeks ago was rescued by police in the country's eastern Punjab province Thursday morning, reported local Urdu TV channel Express.

According to the report, police raided a house in khushab, a district located to the eastern side of Punjab province early Thursday morning and rescued the kidnapped American inside the house.

Police also arrested some of the kidnappers in the operation, said the report.

The report quoted police sources as saying that police got the clue about the whereabouts of the kidnapped American three days ago when they arrested three suspects involved in the kidnapping in Sialkot, a city located some 100 km northeast of Lahore from which the American was kidnapped by unknown people from his residence in the wee hours of August 13.

The three suspects arrested by the police said that they had handed over the kidnapped American to another group of people in Sialkot, who would take him to Khushab, said police sources, adding that the suspected kidnappers also confessed that the driver of the kidnapped American was also involved in the abduction.

Police sources said that the American rescued was kidnapped by a banned outfit in the country, however, they failed to mention the name of the organization.

According to police sources, they would hand over the rescued American to the US embassy in Islamabad later on Thursday.

Local media reports quoted police sources as saying that the rescued American is in a poor shape as he had been tortured by the kidnappers.

The kidnapped American is named Warren Weinstein aged 63. He had been working in Lahore as a consultant for about six years. There were local reports saying that Warren Weinstein was involved in collecting some sensitive materials while he was working in Pakistan.
