Horn of Africa drought areas may see less rain

GENEVA - The Horn of Africa which has been affected by a severe drought in 2010 and 2011 may see less rainfall during the main rainy season running from March to May this year, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said here on Thursday.

The forecast is published during the Greater Horn of African Climate Outlook Forum cosponsored by the WMO.

Specifically, it indicated a 45-percent probability of a below-normal level of rainfall over much of the eastern and northern Kenya, the southern, eastern and northeastern parts of Ethiopia as well as in Somalia and Djibouti.

Meanwhile, it also indicated an increased likelihood of a near-normal to above-normal level of rainfall over southwestern Tanzania, southwestern Ethiopia, South Sudan and southwestern Sudan.
