SYDNEY - About 30 passengers have been evacuated from a bus on Oxford Street in Sydney's central business district after it caught a fire, authorities said Tuesday.

A spokesman for Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) said no one was injured as about 30 passengers and the driver got off the bus near Taylor Square at around 9:30 am local time on Tuesday.

Around 50 people from nearby shops were also evacuated.

Three fire appliances were sent to extinguish the blaze in the bus's rear engine compartment, he said.

Oxford Street at Darlinghurst was closed for a period due to the fire.

The bus fire has been extinguished by FRNSW crew, FRNSW said.
