Delegates elected in Cuban municipal votes

HAVANA - Cubans have elected some 13,000 delegates to municipal assemblies, the official Granma newspaper said Tuesday.

Over 8.1 million people, or 91.9 percent of all registered voters, went to the polls last Sunday, to elect 13,127 delegates, officials said.

Among the elected, 33.53 percent are women, and 14.07 percent age between 16 and 36, president of the National Electoral Committee Alina Balseiro Gutierrez said.

In Cuba, citizens over 16 years old can be nominated by their neighbors to be their representatives.

A second round of voting was scheduled on Oct 28 to elect 1,410 more delegates. All together, 14,537 delegates will be elected throughout the island nation.

All results would remain preliminary until the validation process is completed and the final results are published.

Out of the total votes, 7,338,569 were deemed valid, 4.9 percent were blank and 4.4 percent null, officials said.
