Old loyalist, new leader

New Pakistani President Mamnoon Hussain, 73, was born in Agra, India. His family migrated to Pakistan in 1947.

Hussain finished his education at the Institute of Business Administration in Karachi and was elected joint secretary of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz in Sindh province soon after his graduation in the late 1960s.

He was governor of Sindh province in June 1999 but lost the position after four months when former president Pervez Musharraf, who ruled the country from 1999 to 2008, took over.

Hussain has a close relationship with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and is regarded as a loyalist.

He is a senior figure in the PML-N and has worked in various positions in the party, including senior vice-president.
