Anti-government demonstrations started in the capital of Kiev in late November, when Yanukovych spurned a deal with the European Union, favoring closer ties with Russia instead. Yanukovych was voted out of power by the Ukrainian Parliament on February 22, and he reportedly left Kiev for Russia.
In a recent news conference, the 63-year-old insisted he remains the legitimate president of Ukraine and that he wants nothing more than to lead his country to peace, harmony and prosperity.
