International Museum Day (IMD) is a celebration that held every year on or around May 18, coordinated by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) to encourage public awareness of the role of museums in the development of society. The event, initiated in 1977, gathers museums from all around the world and hold celebrations and activities that may last a day, a weekend or a whole week.
In 2013, some 35,000 museums from 143 countries on five continents participate to mark the International Museum Day. The theme in 2014 is "Museum collections make connections".
